While the calendar may say mid-August, my mind is turning to the inevitability of September. We go back to school a week from Monday and that is the true end of summer in any teacher's book, Labor Day Weekend notwithstanding. With that in mind, and given that I do still have a week of summer left, here is how this summer has stacked up so far:
Average SPF of sunblock worn by Caroline: 30
Average SPF of sunblock worn by India and Warren: 50
(Hey, 30 is a HUGE concession on my part - don't want to look like an old shoe, you know. In my reckless youth, when I worked outside all summer, I've been known not to wear any sunblock of any rating whatsoever.)
Number of minor-leage baseball games attended (so far): two
Number of baseball games seen in entirety: none - you think we're keeping this kid up for all nine innings? What are you, nuts?
Number of times India has been scared by the huge mascot, despite repeated entreaties on her part to visit him: once per game
Number of visits to bodies of water of all kinds (lake, ocean, pool): Estimated at 20 to 25
Number of pairs of expensive sunglasses lost at a beach excursion: one
Cost of replacement sunglasses: $12.65
Number of trips taken away from home: three, all for three nights/four days, two with Warren and one without
Number of trips taken away from home AND toddler: one next week, all by myself, to visit college friend
Number of vacation days Warren spent working: a whole week - he was able to get those days postponed, but still - it sucks to think you're going to be on vacation and then find yourself working
Number of ferry rides taken: three
Number of major life milestones reached by India: Three - moving from crib to big-girl bed, bucket swing to big-girl swing, and from sippy cup to straw cup/regular cup.
Number of major life milestones attempted and failed: Two - potty training and relinquishing binky.
Number of storage items of all sizes bought to hold baby/toddler accoutrements this summer: six plastic bins (four large, two small) and one large canvas tote.
Number of requests made that Warren move heavy storage bin from top of stairs down to basement: infinite
Number of storage bins still sitting at the top of the stairs, gathering dust and junk: one
Average number of vacuumings per day under India's seat: one
Number of spills from big-girl cup so far: don't ask
Number of trips to the doctor: four for me, two for India
Number of calls to India's doctor and my mother about unrelenting diaper rash: Approximately six in total
Number of shots in the ass: one (damn Rhogam! Damn husband with his non-compatible blood type!)
Number of pounds gained during this pregnancy: Ten (so far)
Item of food or drink most frequently craved: Smiling Hill Farms Chocolate Milk
Number of times capitulated to craving: three (so far), based on empties in the basement
Number of days spent wilting in miserable heat and humidity: refuse to count on the basis that it will be too depressing to contemplate
Number of huge, sobbing meltdowns on the nurse's triage line caused by combination of heat wave, insomnia, and toddler: one
Number of mood swings endured: n to the nth power. I'm having one now, as a matter of fact!
Number of times husband threatened with bodily harm if he even THOUGHT of turning the fan from "hi" to "med", never mind shutting it off: once
Number of times I moaned about not having AC: multiple
Number of shirts irredeemably stained across top of belly shelf by bits of food: one permanently, so it seems, but a few others may be salvageable.
Frequency with which I wonder what the hell we're thinking, having a second kid, when it seems to take both of us all we have to deal with the one we've got: daily
Average number of trips to various local markets to get dinner items: one per day
Number of trips to Target during which India had a tantrum: one - this is why I go to Target when the babysitter's here
Amount of money it now takes to fill the tank on my Subaru family trukster: roughly $40. Yikes!
Average number of calls made to various handypersons regarding various house maintenance issues before very minor issue resolved: Six
Number of issues STILL not resolved: one
Number of times car broken into and tossed while sitting in our driveway: twice; nothing taken the first time, all CDs in car taken the second time.
Number of "girls night out"s enjoyed: four, two past and two to come
Number of visits from in-laws: only one, fortunately, but two more are rumored for the near future
Number of school-based rumors I totally missed at the time and had to learn about once they were old news: Two. I am so out of the loop!
